Beck Energy wants to drill an oil and gas well on the church property next door to our house. The tank battery is to be placed 130 feet from our house. The well location was originally 180 feet from our house, but was moved to 301 feet so that we would not have a say when this goes to mandatory pooling. (We have been the most vocal opposition to the well, although there are many others opposed.) The tank battery remains in the original position.
During the course of getting neighbors to join the 20 acre pool that is required, we were given misleading information about royalties and about Beck Energy's standard of work. When David Beck approached us, he told us we could probably expect a royalty of $20-25 per month. After this time, natural gas prices went down. When asked publicly what royalties could be expected, Mr. Beck said $50-150 per month. When asked about safety, David Beck assured us that they had drilled wells without incident. In this matter, it depends how you define incidents.
In Ohio, many state officials have been quoted as saying they rarely give "notice of violations" (NOV's). As of August, 2009, Beck Energy has had 50 violations:
10 for Failure to restore land surface
1 for Non registered operator
6 for Failure to legibly identify well
10 for Well incapable of production- (We think this is for wells that were not plugged that were not producing.)
2 for Failure to comply with permit conditions
4 for Dike or pit not able to prevent brine escape
5 for Unlawful method of storage or disposal of brine
8 for Pollution and contamination
1 for Well not equipped to prevent escape of oil and gas
3 for Safety
